Alaska is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in the world. From the breathtaking landscape to the diverse wildlife, Alaska is a Disney land for those that love the outdoors. In this post I’m going to focus on what many fishing enthusiasts travel to Alaska for, the giant halibut.
The giant halibut in Alaska are also know as barn doors by the locals for obvious reasons, they are enormous! The current record caught weighed in at 455 lbs. It’s important to remember that halibut that large are rare but always possible. The typical halibut caught is around the 30 to 50 pound range, which still provides a huge amount of tasty meat.
Even if you are a novice fisherman, Alaskan halibut are fairly easy to hook due to their abundance, but reeling one in is a different story due to their size and power. To ensure your best chance of breaking the Halibut record, you want to book a fishing charter boat for the full day. It will be an early departure so expect chilly whether, but you are in Alaska so you probably already knew that.
There are many charter options to choose from that you can find on the official Alaska.org website. Check out the video below which gives a great preview of your future halibut fishing experience.
